Privacy policy

1. Who we are

Islam with Ease is a free app for learning to read, understand and memorize the Quran. It is run by its founder while it is being registered as a non-profit. On this page, “we” means the people who run Islam with Ease, who are responsible for the information described here. Write to us at hello@islamwithease.com about anything on this page. The terms of service go with it.

2. The short version

  • No ads and no third-party trackers. We never sell or rent what we know about you.
  • What you write to the AI coaches goes to AI providers so they can answer you. We use only providers that say they don't train on it.
  • Your recordings are never sent to an AI provider and never used to train any AI.
  • Your dreams in Dreams are stored encrypted, for you alone. A coach knows of one only if you switch it on, and then only one fixed line, never the dream.
  • You can download everything we hold about you, and delete your account, from the You page at any time.

3. What we keep about you

  • Your account. When you open the app, a guest account is made for you, with no name and no email. It is kept on our servers, and the key to it is a cookie in your browser. If you save your account you choose a username and a password, and you can add an email, only for resetting a forgotten password. We keep the time zone your phone reports, so your day is your own.
  • What you do in the app. Your lessons and answers, reviews, what you memorize, bookmarks, notes, reading plans and how far you've read in them, the reminders you set, and what you log yourself with Quick log (pages read from a mushaf, time spent revising, dhikr counts). If you make a link to share your progress: the copy of your progress it shows, when it ends, whether you withdrew it, and how many times it was opened (never by whom). If you add a passkey: its public half, the name you give it, and when you added and last used it. Your face or fingerprint never leaves your phone.
  • Your conversations with the coaches, and what they remember. Your messages and their replies; what a coach saves to help you (you see it under What we remember on the You page); and people you mention by name.
  • Your dreams. In Dreams: each dream you record, the night's details, your answers to its questions, and what the book says about it, all stored encrypted; the details you may give the book's questions (man or woman, married or not, your work), encrypted too; your Dreams settings; and anything you report on Dreams. See Dreams, below.
  • Your journal and your tradition. Journal entries are kept for you and never given to a coach. If you say which tradition you follow, the answer is stored encrypted and is never given to a coach either; it only chooses which sources you see.
  • Recordings. Only when you record and choose to keep one, and only for the purpose you agreed to. You can withdraw that agreement, which deletes those recordings.
  • Questions to scholars. The question, which tradition's scholar you asked, and the answer.
  • Groups. If you start or join a reading group: your membership, your username, your time zone and the progress you choose to show. A group's owner can add a reader by first name only (a child or an elder, say) who has no account.
  • Reminders. Your reminder choices; a record of each reminder sent or held back, kept 180 days; if you allow notifications, the address your browser gives us to send them; and if you turn on email reminders and confirm it, your email address.
  • Safety. If something you write to a coach suggests you may be in danger, the coach answers and the app shows crisis helplines beside the reply. We keep a record of that moment (what was noticed and which helplines were shown), so we can check the app responds well.
  • Gifts. Once giving opens, if you give: the amount, the date, what kind of gift it was and the payment's reference. Card details go to Stripe and never reach us.
  • Your Quran.com link, if you make one. Quran.com's id for your account, what you allowed it to share, when it last synced, and which of your bookmarks and notes are which on Quran.com. The keys Quran.com gives us to act for you are stored encrypted and are never in your download. Unlinking or deleting your account cancels them at Quran.com.
  • The understanding study, if you join it. Your consent, which group you are in (start now, or in two weeks), your test answers and scores, and which ayat you opened during the study, so a test never asks about an ayah you have already read. Leaving the study takes your answers out of it; results are only ever published as totals of at least 10 people.
  • Keeping the app running and safe. Counts of requests per network and per username, made with a one-way code rather than the address or name itself and kept 8 days, to stop abuse. How much each account uses the AI, short records of what the coaches did (such as setting homework) and in-app events (such as a lesson finished): our own records, used to run the app, control its cost and improve it, never a tracker. Our hosting provider also keeps short technical logs of requests, which include IP addresses.

4. Why we use it

To run the app for you: to show your lessons and progress, answer you, remind you when you asked us to, keep the app safe and working, and understand from our own records how it is used, so we can make it better. Never for advertising, and we never sell it.

Where the law asks for a legal basis (the EU and UK GDPR, for example): running the app you chose to use; your consent, for recordings, notifications and email, which you can withdraw at any time; and our legitimate interests in keeping the app secure, preventing abuse, controlling its cost and improving it.

Because this is an app for learning Islam, using it can show your religion, and the law treats religious belief as especially sensitive. A recording carries your voice. We use this only to give you the app you chose, on the basis of your explicit consent, which you give by using it and can withdraw by deleting your account. When a message suggests you may be in danger, we show help and keep the record described above, to protect you.

5. The AI coaches

To answer you, a coach sends your message, the conversation so far, and what it needs to know about your learning (your level, your lesson, what it remembers) to an AI model. We reach the models through OpenRouter, which passes the request to the company running the model, in the United States or another country. We ask OpenRouter to use only companies that keep nothing of the request once they have answered and never use it to train a model, and the request carries no name, email address or account number. So that coaches can find earlier conversations, the text of messages and of what they remember is also turned into a search index by OpenAI, in the United States; in a private or incognito chat, nothing is sent to OpenAI.

We use only model providers that say they do not train their models on what they receive. They may keep a request for a limited time under their own policies, for example to detect abuse. Your journal and your tradition answer are never sent, and neither are the recordings you save. A dream goes only when you ask what the book says about it (see Dreams).

The coaches are AI, not scholars. They can be wrong, and they never give religious rulings. Our reviewers check a sample of replies that quote the Quran afterwards, without seeing who asked.

6. Dreams

Dreams is a private journal of your nights. Each dream you record, its night's details, your answers to its questions and what the book says about it are stored encrypted, so they can be read only through the app, for you. A bad dream is never read, by anyone or anything.

A coach knows about a dream only if you switch it on for that dream, and then only one fixed line (that you recorded a dream on that date and read what the book says), never the dream itself. When you ask what the book says, the dream's words and the book's entries for its symbols go to an AI model the way a coach's messages do; the reading comes back and is stored encrypted with the dream.

If you choose to speak a dream instead of typing it, the recording is sent to Deepgram, in the United States, which turns it into words and sends them back. We ask Deepgram to leave it out of its model improvement programme, so it keeps the recording only as long as it takes to turn it into words, and we never write the recording anywhere. The words come back to you to correct before anything is saved.

Your dreams are in your download, opened for you. You can delete one dream, or all of them, in Dreams' settings.

7. Who else sees it

  • Other learners: only what you share. In a group, that is your username, your time zone and the progress you choose to show.
  • A human teacher, if you send them a recording: they see it under an alias, never your name, and only what you send; a progress summary only if you attach it. For one recording in ten, or if you ask for it to be heard again, a second teacher hears it too, in the same way.
  • A scholar: the question you send, not who you are.
  • The people who run Islam with Ease: only as needed to run the app, answer you and keep it safe.
  • Companies that run parts of the app for us, each only for its part: Supabase (database and sign-in) and Vercel (hosting), both in Frankfurt, Germany; OpenRouter, in the United States, and the AI model providers it reaches, in the United States or other countries, which keep nothing once they have answered, for the coaches; OpenAI, in the United States, for the coaches' search index; Turso, in Ireland, which holds the hadith collections and part of the Quran library, and receives the words of a hadith search with nothing about who you are; Deepgram, in the United States, to turn a dream you speak into words, only if you choose to speak it; Resend, for email, only if you turn email on; your browser's own notification service (Apple, Google or Mozilla, for example), only if you allow notifications; Cloudflare, which delivers recitation audio to your browser; and Stripe, for payments, once giving opens. The Quran Foundation, whose translations, commentaries, recitations and word meanings the reader shows, receives nothing about you, unless you link your Quran.com account: then, only for that account, it receives what you sync (bookmarks, last place, notes and time spent reading) and any reflection you choose to post publicly on QuranReflect. When you search the Quran by meaning, the words you search for go to quran.ai, a Quran search service, with nothing about who you are.
  • Anyone the law requires us to tell, and only what it requires.
  • If Islam with Ease passes to the non-profit that will run it, what we keep passes with it, under this policy.

8. Where it is kept

Your information is stored in Frankfurt, Germany. Your conversations with the coaches are also processed in the United States, and by the model providers in the United States or other countries, as described above. Where the law requires it, these transfers rely on the safeguards those companies offer, such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

9. How long we keep it

  • Your account and what you do in it: until you delete your account. A guest account is kept the same way, but one left unused for 90 days is deleted, with everything in it, as if you had deleted it yourself; save your account to keep it.
  • Recordings: deleted after 90 days (one sent to a teacher, 90 days after its result), or sooner when you delete it or withdraw your consent. A recording that never finished uploading is removed within 24 hours.
  • Reminder records: 180 days. Abuse-prevention counts: 8 days.
  • When you delete your account, everything that is yours is erased. What stays, with nothing linking it to you: counts of AI use and its cost, which of their tools the coaches used and when (never what a tool was asked), in-app event counts, and the amounts of any gifts, which have to be accounted for.

10. Your choices and your rights

From the You page, at any time: Download my data (everything we hold about you, in one file; recordings are listed in it, and you can play each one from Your recordings); Delete my account; What we remember, where you can Forget anything, so no coach uses it again; your reminders, and Pause; and email, on or off (every email carries a link to stop).

You can also write to hello@islamwithease.com to see, correct, delete or move your information, to object to or limit how we use it, or to withdraw your consent. We answer within 30 days. If you are in the EU or the UK, you can also complain to your data protection authority. Where a US state's privacy law gives you rights (California's, for example), you have them here too; we do not sell or share personal information for advertising.

11. Cookies and what your browser keeps

Only what the app needs to work, never for advertising or tracking:

  • the sign-in cookie, which keeps you signed in (for a guest, it is the only key to the account);
  • your reader choices, kept a year, and a cookie that hides prompts to give for 30 days, if you ask it to;
  • in your browser's own storage: your lighting, text size, reading place, plans, player choices, unsent chat drafts, and surahs you save to read offline.

Clearing your browser's data removes these. For a guest who has not saved their account, that also removes the only way back into it.

12. Children

Islam with Ease is meant for adults and is not for children under 13. In the EU and the UK, if you are under 16, please use it only with a parent's agreement. We don't knowingly keep information about a child under 13; if you think we do, write to us and we will delete it. A group's owner can name a reader, such as their child, by first name only: no account is made and nothing else about them is kept.

13. Keeping it safe

Information travels encrypted, is stored with providers that protect it, and only those who need it can reach it. Your tradition answer is encrypted on its own. Recordings are kept in private storage and play only through links that expire within an hour. No system is perfectly secure; if something happens that puts your information at risk, we will tell you, and the authorities, as the law requires.

14. Changes, and how to reach us

If we change this policy, the date at the top changes, and if a change matters to how your information is used, the app will tell you before it takes effect. Questions and requests: hello@islamwithease.com.
